CONSUELO MERCÉ

A significant source of inspiration has and will always be my grandmother's artwork. Born in Castellon de la Plana, Spain, she became the first woman in her town to become a medical doctor and went so far as to open her own clinic.  She later emigrated to the United States to study psychiatry, which she practiced until her 90s. A woman of conviction and stature  (standing at quite literally 4'10), she was as handy with a brush as she was with her words-verbally smacking her family with a steady precision when we would act out. Despite this; my love for her, and her artwork has grown over the years and I wanted to feature her brilliance here.

When thinking of the word grey, we generally think of something sullen, obscure, or accompanied by rain and the occasional thunderstrike. My grandfather's name reflected his personality, but his artwork contained the brilliance and color that his outward character lacked. Pablo Picasso once said, “Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.”-in my Yayo's case, the dust clung to his soul while his charisma and light transferred to the canvas. A doctor to the end, his study on the body curtailed his work to a focus on the body. I'm enamored with his style and craft and hope that through sharing his work I can spread his brilliance across the world.
